Thaipusam is celebrated by devotees of the Hindu god Murugan during the Tamil month of 'Thai', and is an important festival of the Tamil community. Devotees carry kavadi, or physical burdens, and participate in a long procession, often starting before sunrise, to honor the Hindu god Murugan and to ask for favors or forgiveness.
