Concentration of feminist organizations and 'protective mothers' call for an end to the institutions, Madrid, Spain - 17 May 2021

The federation of Associations of the National Council of Women Resilient to Gender Violence affirms that it has evidence of some 70 mothers who were blamed by the Justice after denouncing gender violence or sexual abuse towards their children, most of whom ended up without the custody of minors. The cases that have come to the public light and to the media are only a minimal sample of this reality, says Chelo Álvarez, president of the Federation of Associations of the National Council of Women Resilient to Gender Violence. A federation that brings together more than 30 feminist organizations from different parts of the State and dozens of mothers who are victims of this violence who have joined individually. "There is evidence that around 70 mothers who have suffered similar abuse in the justice system throughout the country, and this figure continues to be only the tip of a great iceberg that we do not know how far it goes," adds Álvarez. Because if violence against women and children is widely underreported, the cases in which there is this type of practice by the Justice are not made public either due to the fear that mothers have that the consequences or reprisals will be even more serious. . According to the latest data made public by Equality, it is estimated that in our country more than 80% of sexual violence suffered by women is never reported. The last case to come to the public light was that of Sara B. B., and she testified at the concentration. For two years this mother has not been able to see her daughters or speak with them, despite not having a restraining order or solitary confinement to the minors. The judicial process began in 2016 with a protocol on possible gender violence initiated by the Extremadura Health Service. The mistreatment of the mother and the possible abuse of the eldest of the girls by the father have been temporarily shelved due to lack of evidence.
